Beer Review: Mt. Carmel Summer Wheat Ale

So I reviewed Moerlein’s Saengerfest last time and figured I’d hit up another local brewery to try their summer beer. Unfortunately I am very sad to say that I was not as pleased with this one.

Brewery: Mt. Carmel
Beer: Summer Wheat Ale
Style: American Pale Wheat Ale
Alcohol by volume: 4.8%

Pours a nice golden color with big fluffy pure white head and you can see plenty of carbonation going on, all pretty standard for wheat ales. The head dissipates pretty quickly leaving only a bit hanging around the sides. Smells of hop and heavily of citrus.

It’s got a “zingy” wheat taste right off the bat mixed in with a surprising bit of hop bitterness. There is, what seems like, some kind of medicinal taste which I think may come from the yeast. This is a really nice smooth beer.

The mouth feel is nice and creamy with a light body and mild carbonation.

After a while the taste gets too zingy and medicinal and becomes unpleasant. Also I would greatly prefer a bit more strength. I get flak for liking strong beers but 4.8%, really? What is this Bud Light? Overall an acceptable summer style, but out classed by other summer beers like Bell’s Oberon and Sam’s Summer. I give this a 2.5 out of 5 rating and wouldn’t likely have it again. Sorry Mt. Caramel 😦
