Here comes the second of the four beers that OB hooked us up with. This is a pilsner, something I don’t think has every been reviewed on this blog before. They’ve gotten a bad rap in the past 15 or so years by us craft beer geeks. Some big brewers decided to brew the living crap out of this beer and to do so in the most cost effective way possible. That has turned out great for their bottom line, but less great for our taste buds. But that’s their fault (and our fault for buying it) it’s not the fault of the style of beer. This is a great, complex, and classic style of beer. One that I’m happy to give some more attention to here.
Brewery: Oskar Blues
Beer: Mama’s Little Yellow Pils
Style: Pilsner
Alcohol by Volume: 5.3%
Ingredients: Saaz Hops, pale malt, German specialty malt
IBU: 35
Beautiful pale golden color with loads of fluffy white foam head. Not the most attractive beer I’ve seen, but it looks great for the style that it is. Sure looks tastier then some of it’s mass produced cousins.
Nice flowery smell with aromas of fresh cut grass.
Palate is mostly breaded malt flavors with some hop bitterness. This is an extremely balanced beer, the likes of which I’ve not had in many months. Mostly because I’ve been drinking lots of IPAs.
Very crisp almost biting mouth feel to it.
This really is a great beer and does a lot to help understand how the best selling beers became that way. One day, many years ago, Budweiser was a lot like this beer and you can tell that. Sadly Oskar Blues came here in fall and this is really a summer beer. First time it’s over 90 degrees and I have to cut my grass this is gonna be in my fridge waiting for me to get done.
FULL DISCLOSURE: This beer was sent to Josh for free by Oskar Blues, and Josh was kind enough to share. Thanks buddy! To our readers, and any breweries interested in sending me stuff, giving me free beer impacts the review in only 1 way. That way is that I WILL review the beer and I WILL write a blog post about it. Giving me free beer does not guarantee you a favorable review or that I will tell everyone to go buy it or anything like that.
You guys seem to be getting some great hook-ups on free beer! First Stone, now this? Good to see you’ve found a pilsner that hits the mark. I’ve had the same issue in that it’s not nearly my favorite style, but when it’s done right, it’s a damn good option (cream ales, too). I like Southern Tier’s Eurotrash pilsner, if you can find it. Definitely a different take compared to American versions.

I’m not sure how Josh got the Oskar Blues hookup but as far as Stone I met their PR dude at the Beer Blogger’s Conference and just asked him for samples lol.
I’ll keep an eye out for the Euortrash. We get Southern Tier around here but I haven’t noticed that one before.
