Earlier this year I wrote a piece on drinking beer for/with your dessert that was inspired by Southern Tier’s Creme Brulee Stout. Well my local restaurant and bar Gabby’s has switched out the Creme Brulee for Southern Tier’s seasonal offering, The Pumking Ale, so I had to do a follow-up. True to their form, this one was sweet, although nowhere near as sweet as the other Southern Tier drinks I have tried. On the pumpkin to spice ratio this one comes down a little heavier on the pumpkin. I also got to try Schlafly’s Pumpkin Ale this weekend. Both were obviously pumpkin pie-inspired and were good but Schlafly’s has a higher spice profile.
One thing I will say for the Pumking; it compliments carrot cake like nobody’s business. The spices and the fruitiness compliment while the slight bitterness of the beer offers a wonderful contrast to the sweetness of the cake. If you are lucky enough to find yourself in an establishment that has both a pumpkin ale and carrot cake on the menu, go ahead and get the salad because you will want to save room for this.
Drooling just a little bit on this one…
