I normally leave event coverage up to BrewProf.com and his awesome event calendar but I do want to cover awesome events and the Brew Ha-Ha is shaping up to be amazing. The first two things you need to know are that it’s a charity event and it’s only Ohio beers!
This will be the fourth annual Brew Ha-Ha raising money for the Montessori School of Dayton. The first two years were just general beer fests, last year’s theme was Ohio vs. Michigan (Ohio won), and this year it’s Ohio only beers. That makes it only the second festival (that I’m aware of) to feature beers that are only made in Ohio. I love that we’ve reached a point where Ohio has enough breweries to have Ohio only festivals.
The most important thing you need to know is that the event is on January 31st, 2015 from 6:00-10:00pm at the Montessori school (2900 Acosta Street, Dayton, OH 45420). Second most important thing is that tickets are $35 each which gets you a half pint tasting glass and ten tasting tickets.
Beyond raising money for a school I think it’s great that it’s all Ohio beers with a promise of plenty of rare and special beers. There is also a strong focus on beers not available in the Dayton area. The full beer list is not out yet but there is a list of breweries that will be there. One beer specifically mentioned was Willoughby Peanut Butter Cup Coffee Porter. If you haven’t had PBCCP yet then this is a must attend event. Besides winning gold at GABF this is the best peanut butter beer I’ve ever had [footnote]Sorry Nutcase, you’re close but just don’t bring enough peanut butter flavor for a peanut butter addict like me[/footnote] and is normally only available at Willoughby, just north of Cleveland.
Beyond lots of awesome beer to try there is also a silent auction and games of chance. One of these games is the standard ring toss but instead of winning your girlfriend or kid a stuffed animal you win the beer you toss the ring on! The current thought is something like Lime-A-Rita on the outside and rarer beers on the inside.
Lastly, if you want to learn more about the Brew Ha-Ha or about all that goes into putting on a beer festival listen to this episode from the Southern Ohio Brew Show.
