Women in Beer Panel Discussion – Live at Brink Brewing January 16th!

I am extremely excited about our next live video. I’ve wanted to do something about women in the local beer industry for many years now. But I never felt that interviewing them and writing down their words was good enough. As soon as Jesse and I started doing the videos I thought we had the right format for what I wanted. After the Beer Bubble panel at Brink, I realized that we definitely had the right format. This way Jesse and I can set up the live video and then get out of the way and let some incredibly intelligent women talk.

The panel will be held next Tuesday (January 16th) at 7 pm at Brink Brewing Company (5905 Hamilton Ave, Cincinnati, OH 45224).

Carla Gesell-Streeter, from Cincinnati State Brewing Science Program and Hoperatives, will moderate the panel.

King of Ohio Stout Competition Results

This weekend saw the 3rd King of Ohio competition happen at Thirsty Dog in Akron. The first year Hoof Hearted’s Musk of the Minotaur won King of the Ohio IPA, the second year Streetside’s Raspberry Beret won King of the Ohio Session Beer. For the third year, we searched for the King of the Ohio Stout. I teamed up with Rick Armon, from the Akron Beacon Journal and author of 50 Must-Try Craft Beers of Ohio, again but unfortunately, our third conspirator, Patrick Woodward of Pat’s Pints, was unable to partake this year.

Last Call for King of Ohio Stout Competition

Rick Armon and I are bringing the King of Ohio back for another year. This time we’re searching for Ohio’s best stout. Rick put the call out to all Ohio breweries back in October. And the Ohio Craft Brewers Association helped us out by mentioning in their monthly newsletter for November. So this is one last call to all the breweries to enter!

Here’s how the King of Ohio competition works: Each Ohio craft brewery is invited to submit one stout for the blind judging, which is being organized this year by the Ohio Breweries Beer Blog and BrewMinds.com. (Patrick Woodward of Pat’s Pints, the other leg of this three-legged stool, is cavorting — he might argue “educating himself” — out of the country.)

The stouts will be broken into sub-styles, depending on how many we receive. The judges, including certified beer judges, will pick the best of each sub-style and then choose a “best of show” – or as we like to call it the King of Ohio.

The winner will be featured on the Ohio Breweries Beer Blog and BrewMinds.com, and highlighted in the Akron Beacon Journal newspaper.

The judging will take place Dec. 9 at Thirsty Dog Brewing Co. in Akron.

The inaugural King of Ohio competition showcased IPAs, with Hoof Hearted Wet Musk of the Minotaur winning. The second tasting featured session beers and Streetside Brewery took home the crown with Raspberry Beret.

We will make arrangements separately to gather the beers.

Book Review: 50 Must-Try Craft Beers of Ohio by Rick Armon

Rick Armon, from the Akron Beacon Journal, has just released his new book 50 Must-Try Craft Beers of Ohio (buy it on Amazon). This book takes a look at Rick’s list of 50 must-try beers from around the state. From the weird to the extreme, to beers with great stories, and some beers that are almost inarguably The Best, at least based on medal counts, though someone will always try to argue it.

Book Review: Session Beers: Brewing for Flavor and Balance by Jennifer Talley

Jennifer Talley’s Session Beers: Brewing for Flavor and Balance (buy it up on Amazon) is a new book from Brewers Publications. Jennifer Talley has been perfecting session beers by brewing beers in Utah for years. She’s also been preaching the gospel of sessions beers to others, even inspiring a local homebrewer who eventually went pro.

Book Review: Stan Hieronymus Brewing Local: American-Grown Beer

I’ve read many brewing books, I’ve eclipsed two full shelves of them, and few excite me anymore. But Brewing Local: American-Grown Beer by Stan Hieronymus stands out as one of the more interesting ones. Most books about brewing are either introductory, very advanced, highly specific, or vague and generic.

Brewing Local stands out from all those by being specific in one unique area and covering a wide variety in that area. Instead of telling you how to make a Saison or just rattling off a list of recipes Hieronymus presents a great deal of flexibility and unique ingredients.

Quaff Bros. to merge with Quaff On Brewing for new barrel-aging project

In an almost-destined move, Quaff Bros. — the Cincinnati-based barrel-aged beer collaboration project — will merge with Quaff On Brewing in Indiana.

Brew Minds talked with Quaff Bros. founder/owner Danny Gold about the change on Thursday and what it means for his current projects. [For a little history, check out the first article Brew Minds wrote about Quaff Bros. here.]

“When I left The Party Source, it was on good terms and they gave me the rights to Quaff Bros.,” Gold said. “Given that Quaff On is so close in name, and that I came to work with them, it just seemed like a good fit.”

The creator of storied barrel-aged collaborations such as Blue Melvin went on to say that it works from a business perspective too. Quaff On was looking to start a barrel-aging project as it opens a new, larger facility in Southern Indiana.

“We thought there was a lot of potential,” Gold said. “I’ll still be based in Cincinnati, but this will eventually cut down the 1,000 weekly miles of travel I do as we expand into Greater Cincinnati someday.”

The new facility outside Bloomington houses a brewery, barrel program, distillery, and restaurants. From a logistical standpoint, it means that Gold will be able to set a timeline on collaborations and more efficient source barrels and work with breweries besides Quaff On.

“Quaff Bros. has always stood for a couple things — it stands for collaboration and friendship, and pushing the envelope while creating the highest quality liquid we can,” Gold said. “By having a headquarters, it will allow me more time to control the timeline and production schedule. I can have my friends such as Fifty West Brewing, West Sixth Brewing, or Jackie O’s come out to my shop and we don’t have to wait on anything.”

He added, “The new facility will allow me to get the barrels as soon as the distillery is done with them and fill them with beer. Quaff Bros. originally begin as a collaboration and we have no plans to change that. If anything, it opens up more avenues.”

As for the current projects, Gold said he only has a few beers resting in barrels currently. Those projects haven’t maturated yet but information should be released once the beer is ready.

As for the awaited projects with the now-shuttered Blank Slate Brewing, Gold said they are deliberating what to do with those beers.

“Obviously we don’t want to have to dump the beer, but we have to figure out the smartest move for everyone. Those beers also include Against the Grain Brewing, so we have to figure out the logistics of making it work,” Gold said.

As for the merger, it will take effect almost immediately and will be “official” as of Saturday.

The first big release for the combined project will come at the Festival of Wood and Barrel-Aged Beers, (FoBAB,) in Chicago this year. Gold said they are submitting a barrel-aged Russian Imperial Stout called “Fools Russian” — get it? Fools-Rush-In — as well as variants. He said the beers should be released to the public sometime after the contest.

The change in business structure will also mean a change online, so fans should watch Quaff Bros. Facebook page and other social media for the latest updates.
