Beer Review: Moerlein Emancipator Doppelbock

In the ever increasing number of “seasons” in beer, we find bocks and doppelbocks coming out during late winter/early spring. Like most lager’s these beers started in Germany, bocks in Einbeck then later doppelbocks came out of Munich, dating back to the mid-1600s. Traditionally monks would drink this “liquid bread” during the long fasting days of Lent.

A few words about goats. The link between bock beers and goats has been somewhat mystifying. Most bock, or doppelbock, beer labels have goats on them, and Cincinnati’s own Bockfest has a giant wooden goat, but why??

There is no firm, conclusive evidence but the anecdotal stuff is mostly summed up as follows: as I mentioned earlier, the town of Einbeck is the supposed origin place of this style of beer. Back in the day, it was likely just called Einbeck style or something like that. Well, some folks in Munich probably had too many beers of this style and started slurring Einbeck into einbock. In German bock means goat. Anyway, that’s how I like to imagine it went down but, just like how many licks it takes to get to the center of a lollipop; the world may never know.

With Emancipator, Moerlein is presenting us with a doppelbock, or double bock so we’re drinking two goats. Moerlein first released it back in 2008 to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the repeal of prohibition. Now it’s released mid-February every year wherever Moerlein beers are available. Now let’s kick this review off with a traditional Bavarian toast when drinking doppelbocks. Salve, pater patriae! Bibes, princeps optimae! (Greetings to you, father of our country! Drink, best of all noblemen!)

Sneak preview: 2013 Cincinnati Beer Week’s Collaboration Brew

[Update: 12:47PM]

I just received some more information on the Cincinnati Beer Week 2012 collaboration brew from Jason Roeper of Rivertown.

The beer is called Embree’s Northern Dark after the famous early English porter (Cincinatian) producer. It’s ABV will be 10.6%, SRM at 38, IBU at 32. We will be producing 60bbls this year, same as last year; 6pack ringers (no carriers because of cost) and draft, just more of it. As you noticed by the label we have a longer brewery list involves this year. The beer will be released on January 19 as part of a local brewery pub crawl in which each brewery will brew their own version of the same recipe. We will have buses transporting guests to each brewery as part of the Cincinnati beer week kick off celebration

As always, thanks for the information, Jason!

(Hat tip to Beer Pulse! for the label)

Beer Review: Founders Tap Takeover

The following are my thoughts from the Founders “tap takeover” at the Moerlein Lager house. I say “tap takeover” since only the All Day & Red’s Rye were on tap, everything else was poured out of bottles. Also these aren’t as in depth as my usual reviews due to the nature of the sampling process and the possible alterations the Moerlein pretzels could have on my palate (by the way, if you haven’t had the pretzels at the lager house you must! They are fantastical).

Lastly before we get to the reviews, if you missed out on the lager house action last night don’t fret. Next Thursday at the Burgers and beer event at the Party Source they’ll have KBS on draft + growler fills. If you’re reading this it’s safe to say you like good beer and so I must enthusiastically tell you to get to the Party Source and try the KBS, I may be there just trying to get a growler fill of it.
